“Intelligent Design: Innovation & Construction”

Low Carbon Business Breakfast The Innovation Centre, Bath BA1 1UD

7.45 Tuesday 21 January 2014

Presenters: Mike Roberts, HAB and Dr Kevin Paine, University of Bath

Join us for the first Low Carbon Business Breakfast of the new year, when we will be discussing intelligent design and its role in low carbon construction. The presenters will look at two interpretations of intelligent design in the construction industry.

HAB stands for Happiness Architecture Beauty and is a self build and custom build company set up by the writer, designer and broadcaster Kevin McCloud. The houses HAB build are designed to make people happy, keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer. Mike Roberts will share with us his thoughts on how intelligent thinking helps us understand the ingredients that make places and homes that are both lasting and loved

Dr Kevin Paine is a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering and carries out research in the area of sustainable concrete technology. Particular areas of interest include the performance of low carbon cements and geopolymers and the use of recycled and secondary aggregates. Kevin will discuss how new technologies and innovative design are changing the face of construction. He will talk about the University’s new areas of research, which are investigating the use of nanoparticles, research into using natural fibres, and research in collaboration with the Biology department investigating self-healing concrete.
