Limbs & Things designs and manufactures quality medical training products for healthcare professionals.
Limbs & Things a Bristol based company with an international reach. The company’s catalogue includes simulators for physical examination and procedural skills, anatomical models and multimedia education materials. It also offers a confidential design and build service for industry and corporate clients.
Margot Cooper (President of Limbs & Things) was a trained medical artist, started thinking about the need for accurate, lifelike models and simulators at the end of the 1980s: access to training on patients was becoming difficult due to reduced doctors hours and medical directives which guided medical skills training to using models as using real life patients was not an option.
The business started on Margot’s kitchen table and has now grown the over 90 employees, housed in premises in The Dings, St Philips, Bristol. This is the centre is where all simulators and models are created, designed and manufactured. In addition to marketing in the UK Limbs & Things have subsidiary offices in the USA and, Australia.
To date, the Limbs and Things PROMPT Birthing Simulator has been the company’s best selling product. It was developed in conjunction with the midwives and obstetricians from Southmead Hospital, Bristol and the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. It was developed in part to address the need for improving the management of shoulder dystocia*, and as a result has become an integral part of multi-professional training in many maternity units across the globe. Products are also sold throughout the rest of the world using an expanding network of over 80 distributors.
EIN-SW have assisted Limbs & Things funding two days of consultancy by NTCadcam using their Solidworks programme more effectively which included turning prototypes into production, tolerance stacking and working in context.
“Solidworks is a very powerful design tool. The assistance that EIN-SW provided has allowed us to investigate how we can begin to use more of its functionality. We hope to reduce our project lead times whilst maintaining our high standards of design and engineering.” Peter D’Alessandro (R & D Manager)
